Some music seem to have qualities most people just don’t notice, say, brevity or maybe proximity. As a service to you our reader, we are here to point out some such…

I have honest to god never tried shotgunning a beer before. For me, this was just a thing I have heard about and possibly seen on the telly once or twice. I got into the whole Straight Edge thing as a teenager and it stuck with me throughout most of my young adulthood. Needless to say, I just didn’t join in that many drinking games as a kid. As an adult, they are few and far between, to say the least.
I had to do some reading up …well youtubing up to be more precise.
I thought I’d just dive in at the deep end of the pool with this challenge so I guesstimated from my research that it should be a quick ordeal even with my extreme noob-hood in the area. We have done challenges about short tunes before but this would be kind of extreme. There was ever only really one choice I think. Had to be Otoboke Beaver’s stand out track Mean from 2017. It clocks in at 19 seconds according to Bandcamp as well as Spotify so I guess that’s about accurate. It had to be a bit challenging after all.
Running time aside this track is amazing. We named it 3rd best tune of the year back in 2017. What I didn’t realize back then but so clearly see now is that this tune surely must have been made for shotgunning a beer to. Don’t just take my word for it. Judge for yourself.
I rigged my camera and with Mean blasting in the background, on film, for your enjoyment, I just gave it my best. So without further ado here is the clip of my first ever shotgunning a beer.
Oh! and yeah… it’s a non-alcoholic beer. I still stick to some of my old habits.
I’m not entirely sure that I’ve shotgunned a beer on purpose before. It might have happened that a beer can by accident sprung open and that I needed to “save” it from being wasted. Things happen when you drink beer so I can’t say for sure.
So I immediately thought of Snowings’ So I Shotgunned a Beer and Went to Bed‘ and maybe Dogleg also had that tune in the back of their heads when they gave us the challenge. The problem with ‘So I Shotgunned a Beer and Went to Bed‘ isn’t that it’s not a good song – it is. The problem is that it’s from an album that houses one of my favourite emo tunes ever. So by proximity to ‘So I Shotgunned a Beer and Went to Bed‘ I’m picking ‘Could Be Better Forever‘. It has all the elements of a great emo gem, that screaming emotional lyrics, the proto math-ish drum frenzy, the clean guitar riffs and above all a great melody!
Just like I almost like metalcore by proximity to Viktor this tune is chosen simply because it’s so close to a tune that would be a perfect match for the challenge (but really mostly because it’s awesome). That being said, It’s a great tune to shotgun your lager to. I’m about to try it out, wish me luck!
…and for our next task, we will find a tune that…
We are not the only ones that like to celebrate Artists. Some tunes are just brilliant musical or lyrical homages to other artists.
see you in 14 days!
- A tune that is messing with my mind
- A tune that I heard somewhere and just had to know what it was.
- A tune that is a victim of its time.
- A tune that was released last year but you only just now discovered.
- A tune that you love that you would never have guessed didn’t have bass on it (White Stripes songs excluded).
